Thanks to the DIY group
« on: November 13, 2005, 08:26:08 AM »

First of all I wanted to say THANKS! I don’t post often but I’m always on here looking for information. I completed my first build on solely from posts in these forums. It took 6 months of thinking about it and 3 winter months to get her done. After you have done one kit you can probably make one in a weekend. I also wanted to let you know I bought my turbo and intercooler from sponsors on this site and have no complaints. OK let’s move on to the good stuff the combo:

93 Cobra stock untouched long block, valve covers have never been off
Holley intake only because I was tired of looking at the Cobra intake
42 lbs injectors
3” pro-m blowthrough
kirban fpr
MP T-70
XO2 intercooler
255lph intank pump
stock headers turned backwards. Turbo buick exhaust housing with integral wastegate.
2 bosch blow off valves
D&D clutch w/ stock t-5
3.55 HD 31 spline diff
31 splined Mosers

I have been running anywhere from 12-14 lbs on 94 oct with no hint of detonation with timing locked at 20 deg.

This has resulted in 441 hp and 526 lbs on a Dynojet. That’s 507 hp to the crank. I am happy.

What does this relate to ¼ mile time? On stock tires the best I could do was 12.20@120. I was happy with that but not enough so I picked up a set of 26x10's and went back to the track. What I learned is that slicks and fat radials don’t mix well. I aborted every run because it swayed all over the place. I will return next year with some biased ply skinnies and hope for the best. See pic for launch.

Michigan winter is here so in goes the cage. Can’t wait till next year and again THANKS!!

Nice car.  I see people run at the track all the time with fat radials in front and slicks out back, in fact one of my buddies has done it.  Maybe that isn't your problem?  Is it swaying or is it rolling, you might need to upgrade the anti-roll bar or maybe the diff is going out?  Also what are you running for a rims with those slicks?

I didn't put a anti roll bar in yet eventhough i have it.  It felt like the front was tracking straight and the back was floating like low air pressure. I will be putting a cage in and the anti roll bar over the winter.

I run Weld drag lites 15x8 with 5.5 BS and the diff is new.

I had the same problem with my slicks once I got around 11 psi. Scary ! I ended up putting in tubes and screws. I don't feel that "sway and tracking" anymore. Something to think about.

I'm assuming you have the stock rear sway bar in?  If you are running 26 x 10s you are supposed to run at least an 8.6 inch rim, at least for ET drags anyhow.  This could be part of the swaying problem, some sway is normal on slicks though, that's why everyone is loving the drag radials.

air pressure is vital, also when running wide radials up front and sloppy slicks out back the car is vety sensetive to steering inputs. It's gonna sway back and forth alittle but if you start correcting it just makes it worse. It does take some getting used to.  Did you atleast stay in it to get some 1/8th mile times??

congrats

Sorry I couldn't even make it through the 1/8.  Sad
Trust me I tried. I know I freaked alot of people out with those fat tires cutting 1.5 sixty foots. There was a big block Camaro in the other lane. You know the kind, the ones that make you wonder if your car is running. Anyways I cut  a .05 to his .08 light and stayed ahead till I aborted. He ran a 7.0@97 1/8 and 11.0@120 in the 1/4 so I know it would have been damn close.

next year.next year.next year.next year.

Congrads man, you have given me some motivation with that launch pic, especially since I'm using the same turbo. I can't wait to get my setup done.

A DOHC motor with that turbo would be mean. My power falls off at 5k where yours will keep going. It will be interesting to see. Hurry up and get her done.

it does look impressive cutting 1.5 60' times with big wide 17" tires up front. But don't bother putting skinnies up there as they won't help. I used to have 13" cobra brakes on my car and I run the bullitt wheels. My car was running 6.7's @ 107mph in the 1/8th with just a pair of ET streets on the back. I got the brilliant idea to swap smaller brakes back onto the car and run skinnies, it's gotta help, right? WRONG. not one bit of difference in 60' or 1/8th mile. I'm sure if the car had been set up for drag racing and was getting every ounce out of the combo I would have seen some kind of improvement but since it was a street car with stock rear suspension it wasn't using all the power efficently anyway. Stick with the steam rollers, it really does make people look when you whip the race car next to you.....

This has been an interesting topic for steam rollers and slicks. There's been a couple people say they do it and have no problems but are they 10 second cars? The UPR lowers have no provisions for a rear sway bar. So I have no sway bars front and rear right now. I will put in the anti roll bar and see if that helps.
My goal is to run 10.80's with the current mods so if I need skinnies for a tenth off I'll do it.

 Rock on! Killer!

The lack of rear factory style sway bar didn't help you out any. The addition of a ARB (anti-roll bar) will help conditions, providing it's setup correctly. I would keep the big ol' meats up front it's not to often you see people hauling down the track with them and slicks on back. They really do make the car look slower.  Wink Something to keep in the back of your mind might be replacing that t-5, I wouldn't expect it to last much longer in a nearly full weight car.

Do you think 526 lbsft is bad for it?

j/k

I have a spare t-5 waiting for this one to blow up. Then i will throw in a c-4.

the slick tire sway is just something you have to get used to .... having low air pressure and tires wanting to spin is guaranteed to make the car move around a bit, its just something you have to familiarize yourself with and learn not to over correct so much ... changing the front tires wont help in my opinion ... ive raced tons of cars with bias/radial combos down into the 11 second range, and its just something you learn to deal with ...

Whoa, no sway bars!  Yeah I saw a HUGE difference when I put the stock rear sway bar back in my car.  I thought that it was going to roll over when I got out of the gas LOL.  The anti-roll bar will make it seem like a cadillac in comparison.

I should know better. But one of my buddies runs 9.20's with no bars and said give it a try. I can't wait to launch with anti roll bar in. I'm still looking for that 10 second slip..
